Winnie Madikizela Mandela school award

Background

At the official launch of the Trust, a commitment was made to donate to a school of Winnie- Madikizela Mandela’s choice in recognition of her unmatched dedication to the plight of students in the country. She requested that the donation be given to Mbongweni Junior Secondary School in her birth village of Mbongweni, Bizana.

The trip was made on 31st January 2009 and Bokamoso donated R50 000,00. The Chairperson and the President of COSAS joined Ms Madikizela-Mandela in the handover ceremony. The planning was undertaken in close liaison with the OR Tambo District Municipality, the result of which was a partnership which had a greater impact on the school and the immediate community.

The District Mayor, who was also in attendance, pledged match funding to the value of R30 000,00. Furthermore, two crèches in the community were identified and fully furnished. Two local football teams were given complete soccer uniforms, and the school itself received a soccer and netball uniform. In addition, five hundred village residents were given food parcels valued at more that R1 000,00 each.
